- Introductions - ‘What to do when things go wrong?’ Escalation and De-escalation - Active Listening Exercise – the most essential skill - Active Listening Tools – basics for improving communication - ‘I’-messages and ‘You’-messages - Empathy as a skill and tool for effective communication

Optional Tea Break

  1. – 1.00
    • explaining nonviolent communication (nvc) as a foreign language
    • nvc - moving from “what is wrong with the other person? to “what are my needs and
      what are yours?
    • differentiating between observation (while suspending judgement), feelings (instead of opinions), real needs and requests (rather than demands)
    • NVC in practice - examples and practical exercises

1.00 - 2.00 Lunch

2.00 – 3.30

  • Rank as a key factor in conflict awareness, rank-o-metre (a tool for understanding power differences and their influence on communication) pair work and small group discussion about how to celebrate and share rank, how is rank present in groups? where are you ranking high? How comfortable can we become with our own power? How can you own/share rank/ use it wisely?

3.30 – 3.45 Tea Break (optional)

3.45 – 5.00

  • Review conflict resolution tools/ role play if participants wish/ otherwise group work on case studies.
  • From 4.30 on feedback: gather open questions on flip-chart. What participants have learnt today and where they will go from here.

Cost: € 600 for one day + travel expense (for instance € 50 for Cork City) € 350 for half a day follow-up course (possibly about group dynamics, awareness of roles and other factors in group work) Special rates for community groups available.

Thomas Riedmuller MA, resident of The Hollies Centre for Practical Sustainability, offers workshops and general training about Conflict Resolution, Participatory Group Facilitation, Consensus Decision Making, Team Building, Cooperative Games and general Communication Training. He can also be hired as a Group Facilitator and Family or Community Mediator. He is available for half or full day sessions for groups and hourly sessions for individuals as well as for talks and workshops outside of The Hollies. Thomas holds a university degree in conference interpreting and communication and has completed intensive training in conflict facilitation for groups and individuals. He has worked with Primary and Secondary Schools, and regularly teaches Leadership and Conflict Resolution courses at University College Cork, and several other Adult Education Centres including two one-year FETAC modules at Kinsale Further Education College.
