April 2004 We have been busy with lots of fiddly bits, and the roofing work has been focussed on Thomas and Ulrike's house, but now slating is beginning on Rob and Emma's house. The first skylights have gone in, and the battens are being put up. For the roofs we will be using these rather funky slates from http://www.e-b-c-uk.com/ardesia/, which are made from recycled car tyres, but actually look more like natural slate than natural slate does.
We also hope to be insulating the roof over Easter, using recycled newspaper blown into the roof cavity. Hopefully by the end of Easter we will have an insulated roof, and will have begun some of the plastering. We are aware that we haven't updated the building diary for a while, we didn't really have too much to show for the work we had been doing. We have also done the gutters using copper, put up by local coppersmith Andy Harris, who did a beautiful job.
We have been filling in all the cob between the rafters, a slow, fiddly and time-consuming job, which, thankfully, is nearly drawing to a close. It has been amazing in this wet weather how constantly dry it remains inside the houses, cob is very good at that. The windows are being made at the moment, we saw the first one the other day and it is GORGEOUS, wait till you see them...
We are also starting to come into the time of year for volunteers, so if you would like to spend some time in a beautiful corner of West Cork, and try your hand at cob building, earth plasters and the like, then do get in touch, thehollies@eircom.net
