June 21st 2003 We have had a great 2 weeks progress, following the cob building course, and are now almost 4 feet up the walls all the way around. We have really got the hang of producing good mixes with our digger, with occasional visits from a local diggerman who has a much more powerful machine. We are all amazed at cob's ability to dry out, with such speed that if a wall isn't pared back within a few days it becomes almost too hard to work. We have all the temporary formwork in place for the window openings, and you can now get a feel for how the rooms will be. We have been blessed by a steady stream of hard-working and delightful volunteers, to all of whom we are hugely grateful. We have also been very lucky with the weather, by Friday we were all sunburnt, but the cob is drying out so well that we barely need to stop to let it dry oout, we just go up again with another lift. We will be continuing to raise the walls during the next two weeks, with the hope of getting the walls high enough that we can begin putting on the joists for the upstairs. So far it is a delightful process (and hard work too!) and it is great to see it all taking shape, especially as we have now begun to chisel out bookshelves and niches.
