September 2003 Work continues at a great pace on the two houses under construction here. Work has now begun on the roof of Emma and Rob's house. The cobbing worked fantastically well, we planned (or hoped!) to have the cobbing finished to a point where the roof could go on by the end of Rob's summer break (I teach Permaculture in Kinsale), and we did it. The cob work had started on June 7th and was finished ready for the roofing by the middle of September. Not bad going. All the remains now cob-wise is the gable ends.
The roof on Emma and Rob's house is fairly complicated and will take a little while, but so far it is going really well. Firstly a curved wallplate has to be made to span the cob and spread the load of the rafters. Then the rafters can start to go up, resting on the main hip rafters for the roof, which are now in place. We have also to finish the cob chimneys upstairs, which will be completed in stone for the final section where they go out through the roof. As soon as we have the roof felted and battened we will begin to put in the floor.
Thomas and Ulrike's house now has all its first floor joists in place and work has begun on the second storey of cob. It looks great. They have made an amazing cob stove which will act as the central heat sink for the house. They are also making a lovely corbelled entranceway with a cob arch. We are all very pleased with progress and are hoping to have the roofs on both houses by the winter.
