31 October 2003 The weather is still (mostly) behaving itself and allowing things to proceed well with the buildings. Rob and Emma’s house now has all of its rafters on, and is looking very good, the curves and the overall shape of the roof is very attractive. The roof is made of all local timbers, mostly sitka, but also larch and douglas, and will be covered with battens and a material called Bitvent, which is a breathing wood fibre based board which uses no formaldehyde in its production. You can now get a real feel for how the final house will look. You can also now see the rafters from the road, and from up in the village (Castletown) – it looks like Noah building his Ark but upside down! We hope to begin cladding the roof over the next week or so. Once the roof is felted and battened, work will begin on the roof of Thomas and Ulrike’s roof, and the floors will start to go in in Rob and Emma’s.
Thomas and Ulrike are nearly ready for the roof, their upstairs walls are nearly finished, and their 2 storey chimney is nearly at the final height. Although work has been slower recently due to the complex nature of Rob and Emma’s roof, and the need to cut each rafter separately, we are still hopeful that we will get both houses felted and battened by the winter.
